Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Brandon Community
Foundation?
The Brandon Community Foundation is a permanent, charitable endowment
established to benefit worthy activities in the Brandon area. The
endowment is a fund of the Sioux Falls Area Community Foundation (SFACF),
which provides investment expertise and back office support.
How can I help?
When you make a gift to the Brandon Community Foundation, you give back to
the people and organizations that have helped you along the way. Donations
are tax-deductible to the maximum extent allowable under federal law. Each
time you make a gift, you will be recognized in SFACF publications — or,
if you prefer, you may remain anonymous.
How much is the community trying to
raise?
Organizers of the Brandon Community Foundation quickly met their initial
goal of raising $30,000 through receiving $100 donations from 300 donors,
which triggered a $10,000 contribution from the SFACF Organizers. They
then established a goal to obtain $100,000 of donations from businesses,
which would be matched by a $100,000 donation from an anonymous donor.
Having met these two goals, a new goal of reaching $500,000 in the
endowment fund has now been set.
Which types of gifts may I make?
You may make gifts of cash, stock, real estate, and personal property — to
name a few. If you’re unable to give now but would like to arrange a
deferred gift, you may make the Brandon Community Foundation the
beneficiary of a charitable life insurance policy, gift annuity, or
remainder trust. Naming the foundation in your will is an easy way to
leave a bequest that will continue your legacy of good works in your home
town.
Who decides how to spend the money?
A group of community leaders and donors evaluates grant applications and
then advises
which programs to support. (Our Board Members)
Who is eligible to apply for grants?
Nonprofit organizations including, but not limited to, local governments,
churches, schools, and area clubs are encouraged to apply. In some cases,
an individual or group of individuals may want to take on an independent
project not affiliated with a recognized nonprofit. If the purpose is
charitable and will provide a community benefit, the project may be
eligible.
What type of projects may Brandon
Community Foundation fund? In 2008 grants were given to Brandon Area Soccer Association, Brandon Historical Society, Mothers of Preschoolers (MOPS), Brandon Tennis Association, Brandon Elementary School
& Brandon Valley Youth Softball Association
What is an endowment?
An endowment is a powerful financial tool. Gifts form the principal of the
fund, whose assets are invested for the long term. Each year, up to five
percent of the fund’s value can be used to sustain programs. The balance,
less fees, is reinvested. Over time, endowment assets and the value of the
annual payouts grow, producing an endless harvest of support from an
initial charitable gift.
